Chapter Fourteen

Desiree

While Kaf and I were negotiating, Olanna stood outside my cabin and listened. I should have known. Immediately, she told the Guides what she heard. Only a few, she claimed, but those few spread the word, and the rift between the two sides grew even bigger. The half that were in favor of the changes I’d made cheered because I’d taken a stand. I wasn’t sure what to do about the half that hated me. A couple of hours later, the biggest rumor was that I was going to sever their contracts and banish them, like some barbarian, if they didn’t agree to my terms.

“How could you do that?” I asked Olanna as I paced my cabin. Just when I thought things couldn’t get worse. “Now, they all think I’m going to send them to their deaths or back to situations they’d been desperate to get away from.”

“They have the right to know what’s going to happen to them.” She stretched her neck like a cornered animal trying to make itself look bigger.

“Olanna, nothing has been decided yet.”

“You are considering it as an option.”

“Yes, but did you hear all of what I’d said?”

“You said you’d release them from their contracts.”

“Right. I would release them and allow them to return to the human world.” I stood before her, my hands clenched as though trying to keep hold of the last bits of my non-violent, love-not-war hippie ways. At the same time, thoughts of stringing her up by her swan neck skipped through my head. “I am not Kaf. I would never send anyone to their death or back to a horrible situation. Everyone who chose to leave would be taken care of and have a new chance at a normal human life.”

“What about Sarah?” she challenged with wavering emotion.

Sweet Sarah. The elderly Guide who simply wanted to be done guiding. I knew I should have told them what I’d done with her.

“I didn’t kill her,” I said, but Olanna didn’t seem to believe me. “Everyone knew how miserable and lonely Sarah was. The only reason she agreed to be a Guide in the first place was because Kaf allowed her to watch over her family. Her children had wonderful lives and her husband had died. If the universe permitted it, she has been reunited with him.” My voice quivered as I talked about her. “I allowed her to die peacefully, like she wanted. I’m not some bloodthirsty beast. And you’re going to tell the Guides that.”

Olanna’s regal shoulders slumped forward a bit. A sign that she understood the damage she’d done?

“What if they don’t want to return to the human world?” she asked. “Many of the Guides are happy with their lives here.”

I stopped myself from preaching about how life was constant change and how they needed to accept that. No one knew better than a Guide how life could change. I needed Olanna’s help if this was going to work. But, I needed to stay in charge at the same time.
